Just a 10-minute walk from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre, this Department of Conservation-run bird sanctuary is a little gem that could easily be missed if you don’t know about it. It’s a place to get up close and personal with the native birds of New Zealand. The flightless takahe is the superstar here; you may even get a selfie with one if you ask nicely. The kaka bush parrot may show off the brilliant orange and scarlet colour of its under-wings, if you’re lucky. The bird park is free, but donations are appreciated.
