Ohinemutu was a Māori village and home to the Ngati Whakau tribe before changes to the region were made by the local government. On the shores of Te Ruapeka Bay near central Rotorua, the area was the perfect spot to set up a village because of the earth’s internal heat that offered warm water for cooking, cleaning and bathing. Today, the grounds are open to the public.
