Named after Thomas Brunner, one of the early European settlers, this mine was one of the country’s highest yielding coal mines. Till the time tragedy struck—the greatest in the country’s history. Today, it’s a silent witness to the changed world order—one different from when coal used to drive the world. A memorial beside the ruins of the mine, a suspension bridge dating back to 1876, panels that detail events leading up to the mine’s decline flank the river that runs through the Northern and Southern ends of the site.
