You may wonder why I titled the review "Unexpectedly Excellent". To be fair, I hadn't set foot in the Copthorne in more than 20 years, and so when my wife and I booked a room at £40 for a Saturday night, I'll be honest that I wasn't expecting (hoping for!) more than a clean comfortable bed.....how wrong I was.
We had had a pretty miserable day, getting soaked in the Aberdeenshire countryside, and were a little down by the time we arrived at the Hotel. As soon as I walked in the reception, I knew our super low rate must simply be due to a very quiet weekend. I got the details for the car park entry - book ahead for there are limited spaces, but we were not charged which is fantastic.
The receptionist (I think her name was Lena - sorry if not) was very friendly, and when we enquired about the Club Room upgrade we were delighted to be told this could be added for a further £20. Given that this includes a superior room, breakfast, a drinks voucher each, a newspaper and a noon checkout (is this standard? not sure) it was an obvious bargain.
We dumped our bags and headed for the bar where we were entertained by lovely Will, with whom we exchanged stories, and started to unwind. He was a great laugh and we soon forgot about the rest of the afternoon.
Later on, returning from a Burns Supper, we crept into a very comfortable bed, and had a fab sleep.
Finally, we trundled down for breakfast around 9.30. I'm never very impressed by buffet breakfasts, and to be fair most of it was pretty standard, although the selection is good and the sausages were really delicious. The breakfast room is light and comfortable.
I cannot praise the staff and surroundings enough, it was a really lovely surprise given what I was expecting and we will definitely return in future.
