Tan Kah Kee, founder of Xiamen University, also proposed building the Overseas Chinese Museum. The museum was built in 1956 and opened to the public in 1959. It houses about 7,000 historical items in six different sections, including paintings and photos that document Fujianese life abroad. Highlights of this museum include pottery and bronze pieces that date back to the Shang Dynasty (1600–1100 BCE).
