Taupo | Millennium Hotels & Resorts

The town of Taupo lies in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island. The tourist destination is actually the site of an active super-volcano of the same name. The town is situated on the shores of Lake Taupo, which was formed during a massive volcanic eruption 1800 years ago.

The great lake is the largest in Australasia and approximately the size of Singapore. The lakes area has been inhabited by the Maori people since their early arrival in the 14th century. They came in hopes of abundance, but because of the volcanic activity, the soil was infertile and full of ash. The lake also proved to be incapable of providing a food source for the early settlers.

But the Maori iwi (community) persevered. They found nourishment in the ample bird and plant life and thrived. A trip to Taupo will be rich in cultural history, action and adventure, and full of nature inspired by its volcanic roots.
