Duke Homestead State Historic Site

Washington Duke, for who Duke University is named, started the family business by growing and processing tobacco. It was the efforts of Duke and his contemporaries that turned North Carolina into the beating heart of America’s tobacco industry. Duke Homestead State Historic Site protects and promotes the early history of the Duke family through showcasing the first home, factories and farm. It also takes visitors through the process that is adopted to cultivate tobacco from a seed to a leaf.
