One of the most distinctive landmarks in Rome, the Colosseum is also the largest amphitheatre in the world. An impressive display of Roman architecture and engineering, construction of this building began in 72 AD under the Emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under his successor and heir, Titus. The building gained its original name of the Flavian Amphitheatre due to the three Flavian emperors of Rome who oversaw its construction and subsequent modifications).

It is estimated to have held between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators and boasted an average audience of 65,000. Famously used for gladiatorial contests, the building was also used to hold wild animal fights, stage enactments of famous battles and other public spectacles.

The Colosseum is located in the heart of Ancient Rome in the district of Colosseo. It is well-served by buses and the Metro, although walking is recommended to take in the various other sights in the area. The Colosseum is closed on the 1st January, 1st May and 25th December.
