Set in the state of North Carolina, Durham is home to two universities, North Carolina Central University and Duke University. Following the civil war, a thriving tobacco industry facilitated the rapid growth of Durham and on April 10, 1869, the North Carolina General Assembly incorporated the town. Durham is a popular destination for culture vultures and hosts a number of festivals and events including the Bull Durham Blues Festival, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the American Dance Festival. A number of independent record labels, including Merge records, have their headquarters in Durham, as the area has a rich African American R&B, funk and soul music history. The city is also home to quite a few off-beat museums, most famous of which is the Scrap Exchange, said to be the ‘largest non-profit creative reuse arts center in the country’.
