Te Awa o Wanganui, as the Wanganui River is called, is the longest navigable river in New Zealand, and is a popular destination for cyclists, hikers, canoeists and road trippers. The scenic Wanganui River Road, which winds through historic landmarks that are significant to local Kiwis, such as the villages of Ātene, Koriniti and Matahiwi, are located along this route.  The Wanganui National Park, which offers stunning scenery and significant marae (a sacred communal place for the Maori), is also well worth a visit.
