A scenic 54-kilometre drive from Omapere will take you to Hone Heke Memorial Park, where a monument has been placed in the politician’s honour. Hone Heke Ngapua was born in Kaikohe in 1869. He was the great-nephew of his namesake, Hone Heke Pokai, who was one of the Maori chiefs to sign the Treaty of Waitangi, and who later drew attention to the neglect of the conditions agreed upon. Young Hone Heke went on to become a leader of the Ngapuhi tribe and a politician who was greatly respected among Maori and Pakeha (Caucasian). Along with the stone memorial, this park offers vast views over Kaikohe.
