Visit Vatican City: one of the most famous local attractions in Rome

The centre of the Roman Catholic Church, Vatican City is a walled enclave that is 110 acres large and home to a population of just over 800 people.

The smallest internationally recognised state in the world, Vatican City is an independent, ecclesiastical state ruled by the Pope, the head of the worldwide Catholic Church.

Completely surrounded by the city of Rome, the Vatican is easy to get to by taxi, bus, Metro, tram and by foot. Around and within Vatican City are St Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Swiss Guard, the Vatican Gardens and the Vatican museums.
