Skip the hassle of car rentals and train schedules and instead enjoy comfortable round-trip coach transport from Paris to Mont St-Michel. Board an air-conditioned coach in central Paris in the morning, and then sit back and relax on the long drive northwest through the lovely Normandy countryside.

Perched on a rocky island just off the Normandy coast is the Benedictine abbey of Mont St-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most iconic attractions in France. When you arrive, your driver will provide you with an information handout about the sights before leaving you to explore independently for four hours.

Stroll to the top of the hilly village and travel back in time as you enter the fascinating famous Benedictine abbey to explore independently. A major cultural and pilgrimage center during the Middle Ages, the abbey was founded in the 8th century, when Aubert, the bishop of Avranches, was visited by the Archangel Michael in a dream — or so the legend says. Crowning the abbey is a gilded copper statue of Michael slaying a dragon, an icon that is said to represent the triumph of good over evil.

Walk around at your leisure, viewing the abbey’s remarkable refectory and cloister, and notice how the ramparts have been added to support the Gothic monastery over the centuries. Having explored the abbey, browse the surrounding shops and museums and perhaps walk to the top of the village to witness the attraction's most famous feature: the extreme tides. Mont St-Michel sits amid a vast bay, surrounded by bare sand for miles at low tide. At high tide, the sea rushes in from the Atlantic and surrounds the whole island!

At the prearranged time, head to the designated meeting point and board your coach for the relaxing drive back to Paris.

My brother and I did the self-guided tour. If you choose the same, be sure to bring your own earphones/headphones for the audio pen! For those of you with Apple Lightning EarPods / wireless accessories, those will not work because the audio pen only accepts accessories with 3.5mm audio jacks.

The bus left at 7:15AM sharp, and was very prompt about departures in general. If you go on this tour, be sure to not be late! Don't worry about food or toilets along the way there were two pit stops total one outbound, one inbound, each with quick bites like baguette sandwiches and pastries as well as very accommodating restrooms. Everyone is required to leave the bus during these pit stops, but I wouldn't be too worried about leaving inconsequential items behind--the bus is locked during the break. During the first break everybody brought all their stuff off, but by the second stop nobody really cared, and there was stuff littered all about the seats. At the first pit stop, we got the menu combo meal which comprised of a baguette sandwich, dessert pastry, and drink for under 10. If you want to keep costs down like we did, you can eat the pastry for breakfast/snack, and then save the baguette sandwich for lunch at the Mont.

Once we arrived at the parking area, those of us who chose the self-guided tour were free to proceed to the Mont. There is the option of a tram comes every half hour, moves fairly slowly, usually pretty crowded from what we saw, or you can walk directly to the entrance. If you don't mind the distance, I would recommend the latter, as a crowded tram will obstruct the beautiful view of the Mont. It is also better to walk on your way back to the bus if there isn't a tram in sight 20-30 minutes before your departure time. You do not want to be waiting on the bridge 10 minutes before your departure even if the tram were to appear right there and then, you'd never make it. Adjust this recommendation according to your own abilities, comfort levels, and time constraints

Once you reach the base of the Mont, you will have two choices: proceed into the entrance, or walk out on the sand AT YOUR OWN RISK. You will be warned more than once that the tide can sweep in very quickly, and there is danger of quicksand these warnings are certainly to be heeded, however us and many other small groups were able to safely navigate the area NEAR THE CHAPEL/BRIDGE without any protest from other guides or security personnel. I would not recommend venturing closer to the water for the above safety concerns. You won't get a better photo op of the Mont besides the bridge, which has a high tendency to be polluted with offloading trams and walking people. Whether you choose to walk on the sand or not, be sure to do it at the beginning and not when you've reached the top my brother and I burned valuable time changing our minds at the top.

Once you've reached the Abbey, choose the line for existing ticket-holders, which was to the left when we were there. Our Kanken backpacks were accepted in, as well as the food/drink within YMMV with other-sized backpacks and food not obfuscated by a bag. A quick stop at the ticket window to the left, and you're all set to explore the Abbey!

...that should be it. Though we were not part of their tours, the guides were still very helpful and friendly to us, and the trip overall was pleasant. Thanks to Viator and ParisCityVision for helping me and my brother realize a long-time bucket list destination!
