Hokianga is an area located 273 kilometres northwest of Auckland on New Zealand's North Island. The small, rural district can be easily combined with a trip to the Bay of Islands, as the regions are close together.
The main sites of Omapere and Opononi are located on the south side of the Hokianga Harbour along with the picturesque village of Rawene. Much of the region's activities happen at or near the harbour, which is an estuary that extends inland to connect to several rivers. There are many small towns and villages along the waterway.
Along the harbour are many historical sites, forests and sand dunes. A visit to this area of the Northland region will be filled with quiet, serene moments, exploration in nature, and the Maori and European history of New Zealand.
