What makes this Cantonese restaurant in Kensington so special?
Well it definitely has something to do with the Executive Head Chef – Anthony Kong who has been in charge of the restaurant since 2013 where his aim was to have a successful restaurant and to gain AA Rosettes for Le Chinois. This was successfully achieved and Le Chinois has been awarded Two Rosettes and Anthony has ensured the restaurant has grown with popularity since then by adding new and exciting dishes to his already innovative menu.
About the Head Chef: Anthony Kong
Anthony was born in Malaysia and was introduced to cooking at an early age as his family also owned a restaurant which focused on Cantonese and Malay style street food. Anthony was already helping the family as a nine year old with food preparation and learning the fundamentals of being a chef.
By the age of thirteen Anthony was actually in kitchens cooking food for customers. Over the years he has honed his skills by working in various restaurants across the UK and overseas. Anthony has a real passion for cooking and being creative in his restaurants. He wants to continue to show diners the wonders of traditional Cantonese style cuisine but also to be able to mix it up a little with elements of fusion incorporated into his menu.
He is a true believer in stimulating a diner’s senses – Sight, Smell and Taste. Cantonese cuisine awards the diner many possible surprises and Anthony likes to experiment and be a little “different” with his approach to cooking and always incorporates a few “twists & turns” with his menus.
As well as Cantonese, Anthony is also an expert with Singaporean, Malaysian and Thai dishes. When he is not in his restaurant kitchen food is never far away as he enjoys cooking for his family and friends at home. He says that his wife is especially rewarded when it comes to home cooked cuisine – as he does it all! He is certainly a busy Chef as he also operates the kitchen at Bugis Street restaurant in Kensington which is also owned by Millennium Hotels & Resorts.
It’s simple for Anthony – he just “enjoys” cooking and he would be delighted for you to come and visit and try some of his authentic dishes. Le Chinois is very fortunate to have a brigade within the kitchen that comes from all across Asia – China, Hong Kong & Malaysia and many have worked with Anthony for a number of years to ensure there is a high level of consistency with the dishes that they produce on a daily basis.

Anthony and the team are regularly introducing new dishes to the menu in order to satisfy returning diners who like to try new and different dishes. Inspiration comes from Anthony experiences of his home country along with taking elements and suggestions from his colleagues which makes it a team focus in delivering a quality experience. It’s about educating diners and ensuring they get to experience “authentic” Cantonese cuisine with a little “twist” too.Dishes including whole lobster with Malaysian Golden Spicy sauce, baked Cod fillet with Champagne sauce, sautéed Wagyu rib eye in red wine and black pepper sauce, whole fresh Crab with Singaporean chilli sauce, Peking Duck and Prawns coated with Wasabi mayonnaise to name but a few….
