5 ways to celebrate springtime in NYC
New Yorkers embrace springtime just as much as, if not more than, Parisians. It's a time to celebrate new blossoms, warmer weather and a chance to get reacquainted with nature and the good life. The weather is warming up from March to June but remember to bring a jacket and an umbrella. You may need them as you stroll from the Millennium Broadway New York Times Square to the many spring festivals and events in New York City.
A Flower Show at Macy’s
Stop and smell the roses at Macy's Flower Show while getting your shopping fix at Manhattan's iconic department store. Macy's has been celebrating spring with its annual flower show for more than 65 years. This year's theme is 'America the Beautiful' and the celebration showcases flora from varied landscapes all over the US. Macy's Flower Show blooms from 20 Mar–3 Apr.
A Concert at Madison Square Garden
Could you visit New York and not attend a concert or game? Located a short walk from your hotel is the famous Madison Square Garden, where the world's superstars dazzle their fans. From local icons like Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen to foreign favourites like Iron Maiden and The Cure, all the big names in music will play in The Garden. If you'd rather see a game at MSG, ice hockey and basketball are still in season.
A Japanese Festival at Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Cherry blossoms are recognised symbols of spring and are often associated with Japan. To honour this, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden celebrates Japanese culture and tradition with their annual cherry blossom festival, Sakura Matsuri. The event hosts over 60 events and performances from 30 Apr–1 May. It's a good excuse to wander away from your hotel and take a trip over the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge. Festival tickets can be purchased online.
A Musical at Radio City Music Hall
Last year's Spring Spectacular was so popular, the Radio City Rockettes are returning for a new version simply called The New York Spectacular. The dancing queens of New York have been sashaying and high-kicking their way across the Radio City Music Hall's stage since 1932. This year's show is described as the “ultimate New York adventure”. The ladies and their guests will perform 75 shows over two months starting 15 Jun.
A Play at Central Park
As the season starts to change, you will be able to enjoy theatre under the stars featuring the works of William Shakespeare in a famous city park – a well-loved summer tradition. This free annual event is located at Delacorte Theater in the middle of Central Park. It's free but you need tickets to enter, which are given on a first-come-first-served basis. Tickets are released at noon on the day of the play and it's common for fans to wait hours in line. The 2016 season starts off with an all-female cast of The Taming of the Shrew from 24 May–26 Jun.
Each year, New York City is abuzz with spring fever. Soak in the atmosphere while staying at luxurious hotels within easy reach of Manhattan, Times Square, Central Park and the Big Apple's special springtime events.
