The great big craft beer map of Britain

Jul 23,2015

You don't have to be a bearded hipster to have noticed the sudden surge in craft beer production across Britain over the past few years. It seems that on one balmy summer's eve somewhere around 2010/2011, beer lovers across the country slammed down their pint glasses and cried in unison, Enough! Enough of this mainstream, over-fizzed, under-flavoured lager! If we want a decent beer around here, we're going to have to brew it ourselves! And brew is what they did. In their garages and in their basements, late into the midnight hours, a craft was mastered… and the world was never the same again.

In celebration of this epic revolution, we have created the ultimate tool to aid the people in their quest to find a beer-soul-mate. And so 'The great big craft beer map of Britain' was born.

Check out the full size map below and read exclusive chats with some of our favourite brewers below.

Below, we chat exclusively with some of the beer-brewing geniuses themselves. Read on to find out why Farmageddon is called Farmageddon, who loves what beer, and which brewery only employs failed astronauts.

Dark Star Brewing Co.

We are...

Dark Star Brewing Co. is based in Partridge Green near Horsham, and is known for brewing a wide range of different beer styles, as well as for our obsession with hops, many of which are imported from the US and New Zealand.

Our favourite beer is:

Hophead is probably my favourite, not because it's our best seller, but because for so many people it was the beer that first got them into real ale.

We bet you didn't know:

Dark Star was named after a track from the American rock band, the Grateful Dead.

- James Cuthbertson, Dark Star Brewing

The Five Points Brewing Co.

We are...

The Five Points Brewing Company is based in Hackney, East London, and has been brewing interesting, flavoursome beers since March of 2013.

Our favourite beer is:

We have no favourite Five Points beer - we love 'em all!

We bet you didn't know:

The Five Points Brewing Company is the first brewery in the United Kingdom to be a certified Living Wage employer.

- Doreen Joy Barber, Five Points Brewing Co.

Magic Rock Brewing Co.

We are...

Magic Rock Brewing co. is run by brothers Richard and Johnny Burhouse, and head brewer Stuart Ross. We produce a range of delicious, 'hop-forward' beers that deliver, as our website states, a taste experience which is magically different to the mundane.

Our favourite beer is:

Cannonball IPA

We bet you didn't know:

Magic Rock Brewing Co. is named after the Burhouse family business in Huddersfield, which wholesales Crystals and Minerals from all over the world, and shares the site at which the original brewery was based.

- Richard Burhouse, Managing Director, Magic Rock Brewing Co.

Farmageddon Brewing Co-Op.

We are...

The Farmageddon Brewing Co-Op, and our members are a group of devoted hopheads. We brew in a West Coast (USA) India Pale Ale style where EVERY brew gets dry hopped. At the farm we have rare breed pigs that enjoy eating the used or 'spent' grain from the brews, which in turn feed us in a holistic cycle. We also have hundreds of cider apple and pear trees, bee hives, and we grow fruit and veggies!

Our favourite beer is:

Our most popular beer is our India Pale Ale (IPA).

We bet you didn't know:

The name Farmageddon came from late night chats about what you would need to survive a zombie apocalypse (big zombie movie fans). Brewing our own beer and raising our own animals were at the top of the list!

- Sue Jackson, Farmageddon Brewing Co-Op

Hilden Brewery Company

We are...

The Hilden Brewery Company has been handcrafting delicious beers for thirty-four years. Situated in the historically listed stables of Hilden House, which dates back to 1824, we're a family run business that prides itself on selecting the finest ingredients to create the perfect beer.

Our favourite beer is:

Twisted Hop

We bet you didn't know:

Hilden Brewery is Ireland's oldest independent brewery.

- Owen Brewery, Brewery Manager, Hilden Brewery

Siren Craft Brew

We are...

Siren Craft Brew is a forward-thinking brewery known for its full-flavoured beers, experimentation and collaboration with other brewers. We were named England's Best Brewery by Ratebeer in 2014.

Our Favourite Beer is:

That's a tough one! The special we get asked about most often is Caribbean Chocolate Cake, a 7.4% tropical stout with cacao nibs, cypress wood and lactose.

We bet you didn't know:

The first beer ever bottled at Siren was a 'Worm Beer', brewed especially for an event exploring the deliciousness of insects arranged by Nordic Food Labs.

- Andy Nowlan, Siren Craft Brew

By The Horns

We are...

By The Horns has been brewing multi award-winning beer for over 4 years. The brewery was started by two friends, Alex and Chris, who both have a passion for tasty beer, and a shared sense of adventure. We brew beer in small batches with only the finest quality ingredients, purely focused on taste, innovation and quality.

Our favourite beer is:

Lambeth Walk

We bet you didn't know:

When we started By The Horns we were both still working full time graduate jobs and brewing at night time and weekends. On one of our late brews, at around a 2am finish, we left the brewery to find three police cars waiting outside, with the guys running up and down frantically investigating reports of a fire. It was actually the smoke coming out of our chimney. It was from this we named our Wheat Beer - Bobby on the Wheat.

- Chris Mills, Founder, By The Horns

Beavertown Brewery

We are...

Born in December 2011, Beavertown has gone from strength to strength. A far cry from our origins brewing in the back of Duke's Brew and Que, in May 2014 we moved to our 11,000squft brewery in Tottenham Hale.

Our favourite beer is:

Quelle, our dry hopped saison. Sunshine in a can. Except its cold.

We bet you didn't know:

Every single Beavertown employee is a fully trained astronaut who failed the final fitness test: I just stand outside Cape Canaveral and pop a can whenever I see a mopey looking man or lady in a full space suit. They have an amazing sense of smell so nature does the rest. They are already used to the hours of solitary confinement so it's a match made in heaven. - Logan Plant

- Nick Dwyer, Creative Director, Beavertown Brewery

Thornbridge Brewery

We are...

Thornbridge Brewery is celebrating ten years of brewing in 2015. In that time we've amassed over 350 awards from across the world for our beers. Plus, in 2014 we were crowned BBC Radio 4's Drinks Producer of the Year.

Our Favourite Beer is:

Beers can fit certain occasions but as a beer for anytime we'd choose Chiron, a 5% American Pale Ale - not too strong, well balanced, with full flavours and great drinkability.

We bet you didn't know:

All Thornbridge bottled beers feature the statue that stands at Thornbridge Hall - Flora the Greek Goddess of Flowers. This is significant to both the brewery's roots and the fact hops flowers are used in every beer.

- Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer, Thornbridge

Bristol Beer Factory

We are...

Bristol Beer Factory has been one of the leading lights in the craft brewing scene ever since the first release of its Milk Stout in 2006. It now has three national champions and exports all over the world.

Our Favourite Beer is:

Ultimate Stout has to be my favourite BBF beer.

We bet you didn't know:

The building we're in was originally built as a fermenting block for the old Ashton Gate brewery which closed in 1930. During the war the building was used to produce Ribena as a source of vitamin C when citrus fruits were in short supply. Seventy years after brewing ceased in the building, the Bristol Beer Factory started it all up again, with new equipment and new recipes.

-Simon Bartlett, Co Founder & MD - Bristol Beer Factory

Remember, don't forget to drink responsibly, folks. Always choose craft.

If you're visiting the capital to get crafty with beer, don't forget to check out the Millennium & Copthorne hotels in London. You'll need more than a day to drink your way through this city.
