Summer in the City - Enjoy London in the Light

Jul 19,2013

The sun has been making rare appearances recently, but when the summer does surface and decide to stick around, it's important we make the most of the weekends and light evenings.

London is a captivating city, where there is so much to explore and a great deal to uncover. For many, a jaunt to the local beer garden followed by making yourself comfortable in the afternoon sun is the epitome of enjoying the wondrous weather.

Drinking and dining is, by far, the ultimate leisure activity. With the city sporting a great number of pubs, bars and restaurants the selection process can be quite daunting. Noting the need for outside space, we've picked some of the best places in London for your enjoyment.

1. River Boat Bars

Nothing beats the breeze in your hair, whilst the sun beats down on you and you sip on something ice cold. Add the gentle motion of water to the mix and you're on to a winner. A stroll along the River Thames is a lovely way to spend a summer's day, but why not enjoy a beverage on board a river boat? All aboard the R.S. Hispaniola for a seat on their sun deck, overlooking the river you can relax as London-life passes you by. There's also The Tattershall Castle, a moored boat bar that invites the public to come enjoy a quiet drink, dinner for two or special occasion. Enjoy the spectacular view of London's great landmarks situated along on the Victoria Embankment.

2. Terrace Bars and Late Night Cocktails

This is for those wishing to enjoy something a little different to their regular pub garden choice. Frank's Cafe and Campari Bar in Peckham is as alternative as it gets. Set on top of a six-storey-high car park, Frank's is open from the end of June through till August. Set-up for the summer months, this spectacular setting is a must to experience. Campari cocktails, great beer and reasonably priced nibbles are all on offer in the great outdoors.

If you'd prefer not to pick Peckham, then Shoreditch has several terrific late night cocktail bars. Why not try Beach Blanket Babylon for a stylish and decadent bar that offers a sumptuous setting to relax in. With an extensive menu of cocktail and gorgeous food, BBB (as it's affectionately known) is a favourite for both locals and international clientele.

3. Perfect Places to Picnic

Finding the right setting for an afternoon in the outdoors can be quite a challenge. London has a number of great parks that provide the perfect setting. Grab your hamper and head on down to any of these spots for a nibble on a picnic egg and cucumber sandwich. Select from one of the many Royal Parks that the city boasts, Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens to name but a few, and enjoy the spacious open green to relax in. There's also Primrose Hill, situated in Chalk Farm, which is the classic choice for a London picnic. Set atop a hill you'll witness the breathtaking views whilst you soak up the sun.
