Te Awa o Wanganui, as the Wanganui River is called, is the longest navigable river in New Zealand, and is a popular destination for cyclists, hikers, canoeists and road trippers. The scenic Wanganui River Road, which winds through historic landmarks that are significant to local Kiwis, such as the villages of Δ€tene, Koriniti and Matahiwi, are located along this route.  The Wanganui National Park, which offers stunning scenery and significant marae (a sacred communal place for the Maori), is also well worth a visit.
