Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located on the eastern edge of Central Park, and boasts a permanent collection of over 2,000 artworks.
Exhibits of note include the American Decorative Arts section, which has grown much since its inception in 1909. Having always maintained a special emphasis on collecting art from America, it features some of the best paintings ever created in the country. The Arts and Armor section is another popular section, featuring a range of decorative armor sets from cultures around the world. Late medieval European and Japanese pieces can also be found here, as well as exhibits dedicated to Egyptian, European, Greek, Roman and Islamic Art.
An entire wing of the museum is dedicated to Robert Lehman, a banker and avid art collector who donated a significant collection upon his death. The pieces span over six decades, and are housed in an interior designed to mimic Lehman's tower. Known colloquially as the Met, the museum also boasts a secondary structure in Northern Manhattan. Known as the Cloisters, it is located at Fort Tryon Park and exhibits medieval art exclusively.
