Bioluminescence is the ability of living things to produce and emit light via a chemical reaction and it has fascinated humans throughout history.

Most people will have seen fireflies, but a variety of other creatures use bioluminescence - and now guests at Chicago hotels will be able to explore the phenomenon thanks to a special exhibition at the city's Field Museum.

Creatures of Light: Nature's Bioluminescence will be showing between now and January 5th 2014 and it promises to be fascinating for visitors of all ages.

See how fireflies use their light to attract a mate, squid and millipedes glow as a warning and deep-sea angler fish lure unsuspecting prey with light where there is otherwise only darkness.

There will also be the chance to explore how scientists are using nature's bioluminescence to benefit humans in various different applications.

Residents of the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Chicago will be able to get to the Field Museum very easily in a taxi to view the exhibition, as it is just over ten minutes away by road.
