St. Louis Gateway Arch, also known as the Gateway to the West, is an iconic St. Louis landmark - one that visitors to the city will find impossible to ignore.

This imposing 630 foot tall structure is built on the banks of the Mississippi River and was erected in honor of the Western Pioneers. The stainless steel structure forms the shape of an inverted catenary, a peculiar mathematical shape. Designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, the Arch is known for its high tensile strength and intricate design.

To get to the Gateway Arch, visitors must take a unique tram car system. This transports them to the top of the arch, where they can enjoy breathtaking views across the city. From the observation area, the Mississippi can be traced on its meandering route across St. Louis.   

Adjacent to the Gateway Arch, there are a number of other visitor attractions in St. Louis, including the Museum of Westward Expansion. There is also the Old Courthouse which played a decisive role in the struggle for civil liberties. Today, this 19th century structure has been restored to its former glory.
