Fine art has been coming out of Africa for millennia, with the earliest known sculptures believed to have been made in Nigeria in 500 BC.

Now, anyone who enjoys a little culture from this part of the world can make their way from their New York hotels to Brooklyn, where the borough's museum is hosting an exhibition called African Innovations.

Set to stay until January 2nd 2013, the special collection brings together more than 200 pieces including wood carvings, textiles and beadwork created by African artists between ancient times and the 21st century.

Although Brooklyn Museum has been in possession of the art before, it is the first time it has been arranged in chronological order spanning 2,500 years.

The themes are protection, transitions, authority, masquerade, and personal beauty and artists involved include Viye Diba, Magdalene Odundo, and Yinka Shonibare, who is British-Nigerian.

Although Brooklyn may be across the water from Manhattan, it should not be too difficult too get to the museum from Millennium Broadway Hotel New York near Times Square.

You can either walk across the Brooklyn Bridge by accessing it near City Hall Park, or take the '2' train from 42nd Street and head towards Brooklyn College.

Get off at Eastern Parkway and you will find yourself practically on the museum's doorstep.
