A gift from France in the 19th century, it depicts the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas, and stands on Liberty Island in the middle of New York Harbor in Manhattan.
The Statue of Liberty has been seen by immigrants coming into the US by boat for more than a century and it has also featured in numerous films, notably Ghostbusters II, where it walked through Manhattan to rescue the city.
It is well worth taking a ferry trip out to Liberty Island, as visitors are able to climb inside the statue right up to the crown, from where a jaw-dropping view can be enjoyed.
Departure points are from Battery Park in Manhattan (which is ideal for guests at New York hotels) or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. However, waiting times to board can be over 90 minutes during peak times, so booking in advance is advisable.
All Statue of Liberty visitors must have a ferry ticket from Statue Cruises, which cost $17 for adults and $9 for children - plus an extra $3 for crown access - inclusive of a guided tour.An exclusive shopping area in midtown Manhattan, it is home to a wide range of designer stores including Gucci, Versace, Saks and Cartier. Of course, Fifth Avenue offers much more than just clothing stores, and visitors can purchase all manner of goods here.
The Apple store on Fifth Avenue is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and features a distinctive 32 foot glass cube as its entrance. Two toy stores can also be found here, including world-famous FAO Schwarz and the Disney Store. Both offer a variety of exciting goods for children, but adults will equally delight in the beautiful toy displays.
