The charming city of Phuket with its multi-cultural community has long been a leading tourist
attraction in Thailand. The city is abundant with buildings that showcase the skills of Chinese
workers whose characteristic architectural styles perfectly blend with modern influences to create
style that make Phuket all the more unique. Its beautiful landscape, tropical climate, lush
tropical forests and pristine beaches add up to make it an ideal place for vacationing. Not to
mention its numerous cultural attractions as well as much distinctive attractions such as the
Phuket Marine Biological Centre.
After the Thai-Danish Expedition operation along the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand in 1966,
the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC) was established under a mutual agreement between Thai
and Danish government.
Sprawling over an area of 8.4 hectares, PMBC carries out research and experiments on biology,
science marine ecology and more. It focuses on fishery biology of Thailand’s coastal waters to an
extent that will discover knowledge highly useful for the conservation and development of living
resources in these waters. Another primary objective is to promote education and training of
scientists and students while benefitting the future generations.
Educating the young generation and public regarding the importance of natural resources’
sustainable uses, the selection of studies at PMBC also include marine pollution and oceanography
with emphasis on seagrass bed, coral reef ecosystems and mangrove. The Phuket Aquarium located
within PMBC serves as an educating platform while raising public awareness of the impending need
for conservation. The centre also has a separate unit dedicated to the studies of marine endangered
species, which focuses on the biology, distribution and population characteristics of endangered
marine species.
