The charming city of Phuket with its multi-cultural community has long been a leading tourist attraction in Thailand. The city is abundant with buildings that showcase the skills of Chinese workers whose characteristic architectural styles perfectly blend with modern influences to create style that make Phuket all the more unique. Its beautiful landscape, tropical climate, lush tropical forests and pristine beaches add up to make it an ideal place for vacationing. Not to mention its numerous cultural attractions as well as much distinctive attractions such as the Phuket Marine Biological Centre.

After the Thai-Danish Expedition operation along the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand in 1966, the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC) was established under a mutual agreement between Thai and Danish government.

Sprawling over an area of 8.4 hectares, PMBC carries out research and experiments on biology, science marine ecology and more. It focuses on fishery biology of Thailand’s coastal waters to an extent that will discover knowledge highly useful for the conservation and development of living resources in these waters. Another primary objective is to promote education and training of scientists and students while benefitting the future generations.

Educating the young generation and public regarding the importance of natural resources’ sustainable uses, the selection of studies at PMBC also include marine pollution and oceanography with emphasis on seagrass bed, coral reef ecosystems and mangrove. The Phuket Aquarium located within PMBC serves as an educating platform while raising public awareness of the impending need for conservation. The centre also has a separate unit dedicated to the studies of marine endangered species, which focuses on the biology, distribution and population characteristics of endangered marine species.
