The spectacle of Phuket Thai boxing is one that is never forgotten by the beholder. Muay Thai
shows have been popular in Thailand for innumerable years and their following continues
undiminished today.
Traditionally known as the ‘science of eight limbs’ Muay Thai is considered to have evolved
in Thailand over the course of many centuries; in fact many authorities consider it to be more than
2,000 years old. This age-old tradition makes it differ from other martial arts of much more recent
origin. Muay Thai, internationally known as Thai boxing, is actually only one component of the
entire system of Thai war craft which also encompasses weapon training. However there is no doubt
that it is the unarmed combat system which has gained worldwide fame.
The Thai nation has evolved as a tribal people who have been compelled to defend their
country from invaders for countless centuries. Accordingly this vital combat system has been passed
down from teacher to student for innumerable generations. Muay Thai involves not only kicking and
punching techniques but also knee and elbow strikes.
Muay Thai contests are held throughout Thailand, at venues ranging from air-conditioned
modern arenas to crude rings set up at village fairs. The higher profile fights attract a wide fan
following. After entering the ring, the boxers perform the customary pre-fight dance known as ‘ram
muay’, which also involves bowing and kneeling to show respect to their instructors. The fighting
then commences, accompanied by distinctive musical accompaniment. The sheer intensity and physical
ferocity of Muay Thai has made it a favourite spectator sport which draws many foreign visitors to
the ring.
