News|Beautiful mosque in ManilaLocated on Globo de Oro Street, the Golden Mosque got its name because its dome is supposed to be made of gold. It was built in 1976 for the visit of Libya's president Gaddafi under the supervision of Imelda Marcos, the first lady. Funnily enough, his visit was cancelled but the Mosque remains the biggest in Manila. Inside, the mosque is large - it can hold 3000 worshippers - and a joy to observe. Visitors are free to walk around the grounds of the mosque and local people will happily act as tour guides, but they should note it is usually packed full at noon on Fridays, the Islamic day of worship. Taking photographs is permitted, and a small donation will be asked for when leaving. When visiting Manila, tourists should stay in the Heritage Hotel Manila which is just four kilometres from the international airport. This journey should cost around $10 in a taxi.
