News|A walk in the park in ManilaThe park is filled with gardens, plazas, historical markers, a stadium, an open-air concert hall, a theatre, an artists' sanctuary, restaurants, playgrounds and lots and lots of fountains. It is in a great location at the heart of Manila's financial commercial, industrial and institutional centres, and overlooks the beautiful Manila Bay. The park is a tribute to Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, a doctor and novelist who was executed in 1896 for planning rebellion against the Spanish government. A bronze monument to him made in 1913 is the centrepiece of the park, standing just a few metres away from where he was shot by firing squad. The monument is central to state visits in the city, as it is where foreign leaders attend wreath-laying ceremonies. Guided tours of the park are available, and there are many special events on at different times of the year.
