News|Kuala Lumpur's Merdeka SquareCovering an area of over eight hectares, this beautiful area is surrounded by landmarks but is worth seeing in its own right. The 100-metre high flagpole is one of the tallest in the world and has a special place in the hearts of Malaysians as it was where the union jack was lowered for the last time in 1957 when Malaysia gained independence from Britain. Every year, on August 31st, Malaysians will go to the square to relive that moment, meaning any tourists in the area at this time will be witness to something special. If the timing is right, then visitors can see the Malaysian Armed Forces and Royal Malaysian Police bands perform in the square every third Saturday of the month from 17:00 until 18:00. At one end of the square is a relaxing area, where fountains, colonnades, and colourful zinnias and marigolds are all on display. And beneath the square is Plaza Putra, a food, leisure and entertainment complex.
