One of Asia’s leading racing events, the annual Formula 1 Malaysia is a huge draw for both local
and foreign motor sport fans seeking to experience all the thrills and spills of the race day. With
Formula 1 growing in global popularity and with the competition in both the Drivers’ Championship
and the Constructors’ Championship getting closer than ever, the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix offers a
thrill-a-minute show appropriate for all ages.
The race takes place at the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang, Selangor which was
welcomed into the Formula 1 circuit in 1999 as it hosted what was at that time the first event of
its kind in Southeast Asia. Designed by Hermann Tilke, this 5,542 meter tarmac track covers an area
of approximately 90 hectares and incorporates a variety of wide corners and straights that provides
drivers with a challenging 56 laps.
Built with a variety of facilities that cater to the Formula 1 teams, spectators and media
alike, the Sepang International Circuit is also equipped with two giant screens. Apart from F1,
this impressive circuit plays host to other major racing events such as the Malaysian Motorcycle
Grand Prix and the A1 Grand Prix. The track is situated in Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor and
is within easy reach of the airport, while Kuala Lumpur is around 60 kilometres away.
Past winners at the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix include Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel who won here
in 2010 before going on to eventually win the Drivers Championship in the same year and German
racing superstar Michael Schumacher who drove his Ferrari to victory on this track in 2000, 2001
and 2004.
