If there is one state in the US that reflects the rending of the nation then it is Missouri.

Prior to the Civil War, the state was polarized between pro-slavery secessionists and those who were adamant the Union be preserved. The divide came to a head with the Missouri Compromise, the Dred Scott Case and the Missouri-Kansas border conflicts, all of which exposed tensions.

After the secession of Southern states began in 1861, the Missouri legislature called for the election of a special convention on the subject. The convention voted to stay in the Union, leading to further conflict.

Civilians gathered in the streets, leading to soldiers opening fire on hostile crowds in an incident that became known as the St Louis Massacre.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the war, and explore the complexities of it within the 24th state, the Missouri History Museum is to a hold a special exhibition for visitors staying in St Louis hotels.

The Civil War in Missouri will feature compelling artefacts, imagery and interactive elements so that everyone can get involved.
