Conserve and educate
After a Thai-Danish Expedition operation along the Andaman
Sea coast of Thailand in 1966, the Phuket Marine Biological Centre
(PMBC) was established under agreement between the Thai and Danish
governments.
PMBC carries out research and experiments on biology,
science marine ecology and more. It focuses on the fishery biology
of Thailand's coastal waters to generate knowledge useful for the
conservation and development of living resources in these waters.
Another primary objective is to promote education and training of
scientists and students while benefitting future
generations.
The Phuket Aquarium located within PMBC serves as an
educational platform while raising public awareness of the need for
conservation. The centre also has a separate unit dedicated to the
studies of marine endangered species, which focuses on the biology,
distribution and population characteristics of endangered marine
species.
