What is commonly referred to as Paris Opéra or Opéra de Paris, is actually the beautiful Palais Garnier opera house. This 2,200 seat opera house was designed by the architect Charles Garnier in Neo-Baroque style and is considered to be one of the finest creations of its time. It replaced an older building destroyed by fire.
The exterior of the building is decorated with symbols taken from Greek mythology, exquisite sculptures created by noted artistes, including Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. Although it was originally conceived as a home for Paris's vibrant opera, other artists use it now too. Regular performances include opera, ballet and modern dance shows.
