Anyone with even a passing interest in Japanese history may wish to take time out from their stay at the Millennium Broadway Hotel New York in order to visit the city's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Between October 21st 2009 and January 10th 2010, the venue is to host an exhibition called Art of the Samurai: Japanese Arms and Armor, 1156–1868.

It is to be the first such display to focus on the Samurai and will include swords, body armour, archery equipment and other military paraphernalia dating back to as early as the 12th century.

Accompanying the pieces will be a series of paintings depicting famous battles and Samurai soldiers posing in their uniform.

Situated at 1,000 Fifth Avenue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is also currently showing an exhibition on Johannes Vermeer.

The Samurai regime was abolished by Emperor Meiji in 1873, which meant that its soldiers were no longer able to kill commoners who disrespected them.
