Michael Jackson could be commemorated at the subway station where he filmed the Bad video by a piece of contemporary artwork.

According to the New York Post, New York City councilwoman Letitia James has asked the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) if it will hold a contest to choose a piece that would represent the late singer and what he meant to the Big Apple.

Bad was directed by Martin Scorsese and shows Jackson singing and dancing at Brooklyn's Hoyt-Schermerhorn station.

The MTA has already declined Ms James' requests for a plaque, saying that it is against the organisation's policy, but it has yet to reply regarding the art contest.

In the video, Jackson plays a character named Daryl, who goes away to public school and returns to find his friends have rejected him.

In an interview with Ebony and Jet magazines in 1988, the signer said it was based on a true story and described it as "sad", Hulu.com reports.
