North America's largest parade, the Brooklyn Carnival will be taking over the New York borough
this Labor Day weekend.
On September 1st, more than two million spectators will gather on the streets of Brooklyn as
the New York's Caribbean community dance and sing, all in the most brightly coloured costumes.
During the day, the procession will move along Eastern Parkway, Utica Ave and Washington Ave,
ending at Grand Army Plaza.
There will be hundreds of food stalls selling the many gastronomic delights of Caribbean
cuisine - jerk chicken, beef stew, oxtail, rice and peas, macaroni pie, fried flying fish, curry
goat, roti, callaloo, souse and salt fish among them.
As if all that isn't enough, the Brooklyn Carnival also boasts the largest j'ouvert - a
Caribbean-style pre-carnival street party - in the world.
Finishing just in time for the official parade, the j'ouvert sees many people dancing to the
rhythm of steel drums in home-made joke costumes.
Anyone wishing to attend the event is advised to book early into a New York hotel to ensure
accommodation.
