News|Friedlander exhibition on display in MinneapolisCollecting black-and-white gelatin silver prints, early colour portraits and several of the legendary artist's portfolios, the exhibition will attempt to shed some new insight into the life of the 74-year-old. Friedlander's venerable career began in 1956 when he found work photographing New York's jazz musicians for the covers of their records. Influenced by the likes of Eugene Atget and Walker Evans, he soon secured a grant from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to focus on art. Among his more famous pieces were black and white nude photographs of Madonna, which appeared in a 1985 issue of Playboy Magazine. Apart from the human form, he was also intrigued by urban life and the various paraphernalia that makes up the modern landscape, something that was clear through much of his later work. MIA's ticketed retrospective is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesdays to Sundays and closes late (9pm) on Thursdays. Anyone visiting the museum can book into a Minneapolis hotel.
