Well known for its culture and arts background, the city of Minneapolis boasts of a number of
theaters that are popular among locals and visitors alike. Among them is the Guthrie Theater which
is perhaps the oldest and best known theater in the region. Named after renowned performer and art
lover Sir Tyrone Guthrie it is located in South Minneapolis in the Walker Art Center.
This theater which was opened in 1963, staged Shakespeare’s Hamlet as its first production.
Since then the Guthrie has seen a number of well known plays performed on its stage. Dramas such as
Streetcar named Desire, St. Joan, Oedipus, Henry V and the Three Sisters are a few examples. Today
the Guthrie Theater is often frequented by lovers of Classical Drama such as the Merchant of
Venice.
Another historic theater near the Millennium Hotel Minneapolis is the Orpheum Theater. The
Orpheum Theater is well known for its productions of Broadway musicals. Built in the early 1920’s
and later refurbished in 1993 this theatre is also known to host touring bands, such as the
Counting Crows who have performed here.
The State Theatre in Minneapolis is one of the oldest theaters in the region and was one of
technologically advanced theaters in the United States during the 1920’s.
Visitors to Minneapolis can catch a range of different performances at the impressive range
of theaters that are scattered throughout the city. Tickets for these shows can be obtained from
the ticket booths of the theater in advance should you know what show is playing at which theater.
Some of the theaters also feature an online ticketing office which provides yet another option.
Any unsold tickets are sold off in a ticket rush where visitors can purchases tickets on a
first come first served basis.
