Downtown Los Angeles is made up of the area bounded by the Los Angeles River to the east, Route
101 to the North, the 10 Santa Monica to the south and the 110 Harbor Freeway to the west. It can
also include outlying areas such as University Park, Exposition Park, and Central City West.
Vibrant downtown Los Angeles is also home to several pieces of architecture that should not
be missed. Old favorites such as the Bradbury Building and the Broadway theaters to more
modern venues like the Walt Disney Concert Hall all contribute towards downtown Los Angeles’
exciting cityscape.
The Bradbury Building is the oldest commercial structure still standing in Downtown and
features a very modest exterior that sharply contrasts the inside decor. Visitors who step inside
the building will find a five-story skylight with open cage elevators, marble stairs, suspended
mail chutes and other unique features.
The Walt Disney Concert Hall offers a very unique architectural style that has received a
wide range of criticism and opinions. The home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the
hall has been praised for its fantastic acoustics, which present one of the finest listening
experiences in the world.
A cultural mecca, Downtown Los Angeles also boasts the highest concentration of museums in
the city. The Museum of Contemporary Art has two campuses in the area, and visitors to Exposition
Park can check out the Natural History Museum, the California African American Museum and the
California Science Center. Other venues include the Japanese American National Museum and the
Chinese American National Museum.
Staples Center, located in the heart of downtown at L.A. Live's massive sports and
entertainment complex, is home to professional sports teams representing the NBA, WNBA, AFL and
NHL. This enormous site is also home to major concerts and performances that in the past have
included high profile artists such as Prince, Madonna and Rod Stewart.
Various tours are available in Downtown Los Angeles that cater to a variety of different
interests including architecture, history, art and more. Tours cover a range of destinations,
including the Millennium Biltmore, with many of the most popular ones hosted by the Los Angeles
Conservancy.
