Journey back in time when you visit the fascinating National
Museum of Indonesia, situated on Jalan Merdeka Barat. One of
the oldest museums in the country, it dates back to 1778 and mainly
caters to research in the areas of Art, Science and History. The
Dutch East India Government modified the museum in
1862.
The museum consists of nine rooms presenting a variety of items
under ethnography, bronze, prehistory, textile, ceramics,
numismatics, stone sculpture, historical relics and treasure. Most
of them symbolise various stages of living in Indonesia of
different cultural groups.
The opening hours varies depending on which day of the week it is.
On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday the museum is open from
8.30 am to 2.30 pm and on Saturdays from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm while
on Fridays it's only from 8.30 am to 11.30 am. On Mondays,
generally the museum is closed for viewers. The students and
visitor groups could make arrangements for special tours around the
museum by prior notification.
