Date From 01 April 2012 To 31 December 2012
Address Doha Fort, Al Bida, Doha, Qatar

People who travel to Doha will find an increasingly modern city that has benefited greatly from the Middle East's roaring oil trade.

However, there are still distinct examples of the area's heritage and it is easy to learn more about Qatar's history.

The region has a plethora of stunning architecture for travellers to explore, although few buildings have the same historical appeal as the impressive Doha Fort.

Located in the city's Al Bida district, the fort was erected during the Ottoman era and was once used as a military barracks by the Turkish army.

Despite its imposing nature, the construction can be a lovely place to go and relax, as the main building surrounds a peaceful inner courtyard, which contains a pretty fountain. There are also a multitude of relics housed inside the fort, including wood carvings, weavings, gold and paintings.

Unfortunately, many of Doha Fort's original features were lost during upgrade work in the 1970s, but an ongoing project is geared towards the restoration of these unique characteristics.

The fort is a must-see landmark for cultural tourists who are staying at the Millennium Hotel Doha, which is just a short drive away.
