Families staying at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel Chicago over Christmas are sure to find that the Windy City is a haven of festive activities.

This is according to Miriam Y Cintron, writing for the Chicago Gazette, who said there is plenty to do that will allow visitors to get into the Christmas spirit before the big day itself.

She recommended heading to the John Hancock Centre on Michigan Avenue, which is now hosting its annual Winter Wonderland and allowing little ones to enter the Legoland Discovery attraction for free.

This is also a great vantage point from which to check out the fairy lights on the Magnificent Mile, Ms Cintron said.

Meanwhile, Macy's on State Street is also worth visiting at this time of year, as the department store brings in more than 1,200 themed ornaments and 25,000 lights to celebrate Christmas. This year's theme is A Letter's Journey to Santa Claus.

For another festive event in Chicago, a trip to the city's Christkindlmarket could be perfect. This is similar to Germany's Christmas markets and visits every year between November 25th and December 24th within Daley Plaza.
