Gerald Early, an American scholar once said that if a study of American culture is made in 2,000 years time, jazz music, the constitution and baseball will be acknowledged as the three most significant cultural contributions that American civilization has made.

America's love affair with its national sport has been celebrated formally since the Baseball As America exhibition was created by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in conjunction with the country's leading museums.

The ground-breaking exhibition was originally designed to be a four-year program but such has been its popularity, the run has been extended and is to appear at museums all over the country.

It originally opened in New York in 2002 at the American Museum of Natural History but is currently resident at the Museum of Science in Boston and will remain there until September 1st, 2008.

The national tour marks the first time the collection has left its permanent home at Cooperstown.

But anyone expecting the usual statistical journey through the sport's highs and lows will be pleased to learn that the history of America itself is inextricably intertwined with the game.

Baseball As America is a celebration of values that encapsulate the national character such as freedom, patriotism, equality and opportunity.
