The Boston North End is a place of history, vibrant culture, great food and interesting people.
Widely regarded as being the oldest residential neighborhood in Boston it has almost 400 years of
history with some of Boston’s wealthiest residents settling here in the 1630’s. Though the area
gained fame as an upper class suburb at the outset, it later became a poor community constituted
mostly by freed black slaves. During the 1800’s the area housed many Irish immigrants who
subsequently became the majority until the early 1900’s. The cultural and social changes of the
North End did not stop there, during the early part of the 20th century it was the hub of Jewish
religion and culture in Boston; Hebrew inscriptions on many buildings in the area are testament to
this fact. Today the North End is home to a large number of Italian-Americans earning it the
nickname “Little Italy”.
Though it is one of the earliest settlements in Boston, much of the North End architecture
belongs to the 19th and 20th centuries. Among some interesting architectural works are the
Old North Church, the Paul Revere House, the Clough House and the Pierce-Hichborn House which are
representative of the varied tapestry of American design.
North End’s other claim to fame is the presence of many excellent restaurants in its
precinct, no doubt influenced by its large Italian population. The hundred or so dining
establishments that are squeezed into North End offer culinary delights from all over the world.
But what the North End is famous for is its delectable Italian food; regional delicacies from
places like Abruzzi, Puglia, Sicily and Lombardy can all be enjoyed in this tiny American
neighborhood.
Specialty gourmet food outlets that stock everything from mozzarella to flax seed are to be
found, while artwork, high quality apparel and a variety of gift items can also be bought at North
End Boston. Millennium Bostonian, a North End Boston hotel, is located conveniently close to this
destination and provides easy access to the variety of shopping options here. When not indulging in
the array of shopping at North End Boston, hotel guests can be assured of a comfortable and
enjoyable stay at the Millennium Bostonian Hotel with its range of amenities.
