Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race could be ideal for anyone staying in Anchorage hotels as it combines exciting, fast-paced sporting action with a real insight into the local culture and customs.

This year it will start on March 2nd and the first few canine steps of the 1,049 miles of pure adrenaline begins in Anchorage. The public and are encouraged to come and see the teams and their dogs.

There is even an auction that will see on lucky winner capture a spot on a sled for the first 11 miles of the event.

The Iditarod National Historic Trail was a supply route to mining camps and old trading posts, with dog mushers asked to carry out most of the $30 million in gold that was mined in the interior and northwestern Alaska.
