National Museum of Indonesia

The National Museum of Indonesia
, located on Jalan Merdeka Barat, is one of the oldest museums in the country dating back to 1778. Locals popularly refer to it as the elephant building, due to the elephant statue located in the forecourt.

The museum consists of nine rooms presenting collections in the following classes; ethnography, bronze, prehistory, textile, ceramics, numismatics, stone sculpture, historical relics and treasure. The collections trace the various stages of the development of different cultural groups throughout Indonesian history.

The Indonesian Heritage Society also operates tours of the museum for visitors wanting to get a more in-depth insight into the collections. Contact the museum for more information.
