The National Independence Monument, known as
Monas, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Jakarta.
Significant to Indonesians as a symbol of freedom,
Monas stands at a height of 132m, and was built to commemorate independence from Dutch
colonial rule. Commissioned by then President Soekarno, construction of the monument began in 1961
and was finally completed 15 years later in 1975.
The monument is topped with some 35kgs of gold.
An eye-catching tower watching over Jakarta, the lighted monument creates a stunning sight at
night against the dark sky.
