Place Vendome
Location & Attractions|Place VendomeHistorically the Place Vendome was built in 1702 in honour of the then monarch Louis XIV and was meant to be a tribute to his gallant army. A statue of the king riding on a horse was placed in the centre of the square which was then referred to as the Place Louis le Grand. The tall distinctive columnar structure known as the Vendome Column was a later addition. It was built during the time of Napoleon and commemorates the Victory of Austerlitz. According to legend, the bronze plates for this 425 foot structure were taken from the cannons of the combined armies of Europe. This monument which was based on the Roman Trajan’s Column features a statue of Napoleon at its summit. In recent times this area has become famous as a place of fashion and style, many famous hairdressers have their salons located around the square and there are also a number of luxury hotels around Place Vendome Paris. The Millennium Hotel Paris Opera which is located close to the Place Vendome also offers you easy access to many of the important landmarks in the city of Paris. |
