Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival Penang is one of the most awaited annual events celebrated in Malaysia, usually in late May or early June. Originated in China over 2000 years ago, the Dragon Boat Festival has an astounding Chinese legacy. Today, the festival is commemorated in most South East Asian countries recalling this legendary past.
The Penang Boat Festival attracts both local and foreign water sport enthusiasts to the banks of the beautiful Teluk Bahang Dam. Although it was limited to local participants originally, today international teams from all over the world get the opportunity to take part in the event, making it a tough challenge boasting diversified talents and young spirit.
Visitors in Penang can witness this vibrant event while cheering and roaring for the energetic rowing teams featuring 20 to 22 sturdy men, urging them on to cross the finish line first and gain ultimate victory. The traditional dragon headed boats decorated in flamboyant décor and painted in multi colours, glide across the waters to the rhythm of pounding drumbeats. The event also gives you the chance to witness a host of ancient religious and cultural rites including those featuring rice dumplings, performed by the side of the Teluk Bahang Dam.
