Merdeka Day Parade
The annual Merdeka Day Parade is held in commemoration of Malaysia’s Independence at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur on the 31st of August. This is one of the most colourful Kuala Lumpur events celebrated annually in Malaysia. The festival is followed by dance performances, open air concerts, sports festivals and carnivals. One of the most prominent features of the event is the involvement of the Royal Family in this national celebration. You can witness the Royal Family members, Prime Minister and other dignitaries of the government participating in this colourful and fascinating parade.
Aircrafts of the Malaysian Army Air Force, Royal Malaysian Navy and the Royal Malaysian Air Force fly above in a salute to the nation's commemoration of independence, filling the sky in an awe-inspiring display. Military helicopters carrying the Malaysian national flag, the military flags of the Malaysian Armed Forces and its three units as well as the different flags of the nation's 13 states and three federal territories, follow the planes.
The most anticipated features of the Merdeka Day Parade are the performances of young dancers dressed in colourful costumes, the various drill displays, instrumental performances of the Malaysian ethnic percussion band and the civil and military marching squads. A stage is set at Merdeka Square in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building for government dignitaries, military personnel and officials, and performing troops and marching squads march past the stage to show their respect. It is a patriotic day for Malaysians and an unforgettable day for tourists to witness the country’s glorious celebrations.
